Finding Your Purpose: A Transformative Annual Exercise

Written on

Chapter 1: Understanding Your Dreams

Determining your ideal life begins with clarifying your aspirations.

To uncover your true purpose, it’s essential to delve deep into your identity and desires. The journey starts with self-reflection and asking yourself profound questions, followed by detailed responses. By genuinely answering the questions below, you'll create a solid foundation for the life you envision.

What do you wish to ACHIEVE?

Exploring personal achievements and aspirations

Consider the experiences you hope to gain throughout your life. Be truthful; life is limited, and so is the number of extraordinary moments you can enjoy.

Exercise 1: List 3-5 ambitions you want to accomplish in your lifetime. For instance: Explore the globe, launch a startup, master filmmaking, or perform your music in front of an audience. While these examples may seem broad, strive for specificity for optimal outcomes.

Think grandly and prioritize your desires. If you were reflecting on your life at 90, what would you regret not experiencing?

What kind of person do you aspire to BE?

Imagining future identity and roles

Revisit your youthful dreams with the question: “What did you want to be when you grew up?”

Exercise 2: Write down 3-5 roles you wish to embody in your lifetime. Examples include: Musician, professional snowboarder, CEO, researcher, or parent.

What possessions do you desire to HAVE?

Identifying desired possessions and values

While I lean towards minimalism, it’s beneficial to clarify what you wish to possess. Whether it’s tangible items like luxury cars or intangible goals like personal freedom and financial security, understanding your desires provides direction for your actions.

Exercise 3: Compile a list of 3-5 things you want to have in your life. Some examples could be: Financial freedom, a thriving personal brand, a million followers on Medium, a supportive circle of friends, children, or even a Nobel Peace Prize.

What holds the greatest significance?

Reflecting on life’s priorities and values

One of life's beautiful truths is that we cannot pursue every goal. Achieving significant dreams often requires sacrifices. Contemplate the experiences you value and the legacy you wish to leave behind.

Now we approach the most crucial (and likely the toughest) step in this process.

Exercise 4 (The Final Step): Review your lists of aspirations, identities, and possessions, and select ONLY the top three most important items. From these three pivotal goals, outline the first five actions you can take to move closer to realizing them.

I hope this serves as a solid starting point for crafting the life you desire.
